The Charles North Community Association is the neighborhood organization representing the residents, businesses and institutions in the Charles North Urban Renewal Area, which is roughly bounded by I-83 on the South, Hargrove Alley to the east, 22nd Street to the North, and Falls Road to the West. Both sides of Saint Paul Street, Charles Street, Maryland Avenue and Howard Street from Penn Station to 22nd Street are included in the boundaries. The urban renewal plan dates to 1982, and prior to that time there was a business association that promoted the area.
We serve as a primary point of contact with Baltimore City for the area, and work closely with the Department of Planning
(www.baltimorecity.gov) and the Baltimore Development Corporation (www.baltimoredevelopment.com) on the implementation and enforcement of our urban renewal plan. The association often gets to review and comment on zoning and liquor license activities in our neighborhood.
We are one of the four constituent neighborhoods of the Midtown Community Benefits District (www.midtowncommunity.org), which provides supplementary services to keep the area clean, green and safe south of 20th Street. The Charles Village Community Benefits District (www.charlesvillage.org) serves the neighborhood in a similar fashion from 20th Street north.
The Midtown Development Corporation (www.midtowndevelopment.org) promotes the health and well-being of residents and residential redevelopment within the Midtown Benefits District, particularly with historic tax credits and other sources of community grants. The community is part of the Saint Paul Street, Old Goucher and North Central National Register Historic Districts. Charles Street Development Corporation (www.charlesstreet.org) promotes the economic vitality of that key corridor.
The Station North Arts and Entertainment, Inc. (www.stationnorth.org) supports the artists living in the district and promotes the area as an arts and entertainment destination.
All of the above, plus development proposals and police reports, are presented at our public community meetings, which take place the 3rd Tuesday of odd-numbered months at 5:30pm at Saint Marks Lutheran Church, 1900 Saint Paul Street. Please join us!
